Right To Information Act 2005

The Right to Information Act 2005 is a landmark piece of legislation that aims to induce transparency into the workings of the government and provide the citizens of India, the rightful owners of information, access to the same. There are various websites providing detailed information on the act, how to use it, etc. We will not try to duplicate that effort here. This is a quick synopsis of what information can be obtained and why you should obtain it.

What information can we get to know?

Under the RTI, you, as a citizen of India, can demand almost any information from any government body. This includes

  • any information under the possession of any government department
  • photocopies of contracts, files, audits, etc.
  • samples of materials used in construction of roads, government buildings, water supplied to a community, etc.
  • the right to inspect government documents, inspect work completed or under-construction
  • the status of your complaints

Why should YOU get to know?

If you are like us, you express resentment over the way governments in India are run. There is no point complaining about inefficient and corrupt governance when we do not do anything about it. The RTI seems a flicker of hope, that we as responsible citizens should use to bring our nation back on track. Do not dismiss the RTI act as another band-aid on top of our bureaucracy. The RTI act works. People have used this act successfully. All YOU need to utilize RTI is some time and Rs. 10/-. Imagine being able to spend a few rupees and ensuring the road outside your house actually gets laid, or water is supplied to your locality?

The RTI act proves YOU with access to information. It is up to you to use it. Do your part to save your country, and do not complain without making an effort.

Why this website?

There are a lot of websites out there providing information about RTI and resources on how to use it. The act is useless unless we utilize it. SaveYourIndia.Org attempts to

  • Build a community of like-minded individuals.
  • Allow them to collaborate on how to efficiently utilize the RTI act
  • Learn from other people's experiences
  • Properly categorize information, and have some kind of a search engine.
  • Research on the information obtained and write to Ministers, MPs, MLAs and more importantly the press
